Full Description

C1-C3 pottery, including samian and colour coated, flue tiles and sandstone quern (S1).
Total area of scatter fairly large and might extend to W (different landowner). Selected material collected over several years, mostly in 1970s, includes roof and box tile (but apparently no tesserae?), much Samian and Nene Valley (C3-C4 types), some Oxford, Much Hadham and shell gritted ware, one Rhenish sherd, one ?amphora sherd. Two coins (Constantinian 320s and 330s) also found on surface. None of the finds seen suggest activity before C2, majority is C3 and C4 (S2).
According to (S3) Geoff Moss says area produces tesserae and fragments of (Purbeck?) marble. Also report of Rom tile in adjacent Church Field (S3), so site probably extending further W than marked on HER map
A layer of large flints seen in side of ditch at c.TM 1147 7546 about 1-1.5 ft below surface. Distribution of surface finds also sketched (S4).
