Monument record THD 012 - Claimed findspot of LBA hoard, or possibly ESax cemetery (see THD Misc).

LBA hoard.
Three socketed axes (Evans, R2, 462 records only 2) and broken, decorated, spearhead (pegged spearhead with band and dot decoration on socket, damaged point)(all lost), 1 gouge, awl, socketed hammer, socketed knife & pieces bronze cake (? from same source; not listed by Evans) (S1)(S2). A second spearhead & 3 socketed axes according to (S2, S4).
Dug up in gravel pit (R1) 'situated at the foot of a hill … about half a mile from the church' in 1811 (S2)(S4) or bush draining (S3).
According to OS map of circa 1926 'Bronze Implements & Cinery Urn found AD1870 '. The OS record map (card not seen) has hand written changes to read 'Bronze Age Implements & Cinery Urn found AD 1811 and has added site ref number 14 with 'A/S inhum. cemetery' beside it. See THD Misc (SF 04067). There is clearly some confusion. This findspot may relate to the cemetery found draining the land though it may also be the hoard findspot, it certainly is at the foot of a hill & about half a mile from the church. Note there is no trace of a gravel pit at this location on 1880s or later OS maps though the tithe map hasn't been checked. (R1) needs checking.
