Full Description

1950s-1960s: Newport's Gravel Pit, being an extension of earlier workings including one pit recorded as being 'three quarters of a mile east of the church' (ie Kennett church, not Kentford)

Pits known since 1870s. Hand-axes said to have been sold by workmen in 1950s. Palaeoliths collected by R J MacRae in 1950s and 1960. Majority of the artefacts found in fine yellow silt near base of gravel section. Pit levelled and arable, (S1-S2).
