Full Description
Button's Green Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a loose courtyard plan. The farmhouse is detached and set side on to the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a private track in an isolated location. Theis farmstead survives intact with additional modern sheds on the side. (S1-6).
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
The barns form a loose U-shaped courtyard plan with the farmhouse detatched to the east. The main barn encloses the west side of the yard and the second barn, the application site, encloses the southern side. The historic maps on the following page, show the farmstead much as it is today, but with the farmhouse as a single range, the south wing is a modern addition. The barn is timber framed with black timber cladding, a red clay pantile roof and a tall flint and red brickwork plinth. The barn is particularly tall giving it an impressive scale as viewed from the yard. The three-bay barn originally was a threshing barn with opposing doors, but the rear doors have now been bricked in. The fabric and historic maps indicate that there was once a porched gable. To the west is an attached shelter shed known as the cart lodge (S7).
