Full Description

St Mary's Church. In Former domesday vill of Easton ? (see S4).
Saxo-Norman quoins long and short work at E end of nave; slit window in N wall and round headed doorway. Otherwise C14-C15 and C19.
Alleged moat? Restored in C19. Taylor & Taylor state that the churchyard was circular, surrounded by a ditch or moat partially filled with water. No traces of ditch or moat mentioned by authority 2 are visible on OS APs. The churchyard appears to be rectangular rather than circular. It is shown as sub-circular/hexagonal on OS 1st ed map of 1837 (S3) but is certianly rectangular by the time of the 1904 edition. Note churchyards in adjoining parishes of Hemingstone and Coddenham are shown in a similar form. Replotted after (S3) on HER map. Tithe Map needs checking.
