Full Description

'The HANIBAL [sic], Rogers, from London to Shields, is gone to pieces in Yarmouth Roads.' (1)

'Yarmouth, Nov.5: On Saturday morning last, between 3 and 4 o'clock, a most tremendous gale of wind from the NNE suddenly came down, and continued to blow with unabating fury for 3 hours, and there being a great number of ships off Winterton, and in Yarmouth, Corton, and Lowestoft Roads . . . great destruction ensued amongst the shipping . . . The following are the particulars which are come to hand of the ships driven ashore on the coasts . . . At Lowestoff . . . HANNIBAL, of and for London, Joseph Rogers, master, with coals from Shields, wrecked.' (2)

'Newcastle, November 7, 1789 . . . Yesterday se'nnight at night, a violent gale of wind suddenly came on from the ENE, which continued, without intermission, till Saturday morning, attended with hail and snow . . .

'The ships below named are reported to be lost, and on shore, but the accounts being very contradictory, we can by no means vouch for the authenticity of the very melancholy intelligence conveyed to our readers . . . HANNIBAL, Rogers [and others] . . . lost, crews saved . . . ' (4)

'The following vessels were driven and wrecked on the main between Lowestoft, 9 miles to the south, and Eccles, 18 miles to the northward, of Yarmouth:

'At Lowestoft . . . HANNIBAL, Rogers, of London, from Newcastle, with coals . . .

' . . . The HANNIBAL, Rogers, from London to Shields, is gone to pieces in Yarmouth Roads . . . ' (5)

'The fatal effects of the late gale on the Norfolk coasts, are dreadful to relate, both from the loss of property and the bad consequences arising from the want of that temporary supply the cargoes of coals would have been to the metropolis at this present time, when they are so much wanted, and still more from the number of lives lost in the storm . . .

'The following ships have suffered in the late storm off Yarmouth . . . the HANNIBAL, Rogers, of London, ashore off Lowestoffe . . .' (6)

The entry for this vessel in the United Kingdom Shipwreck Index appears under Norfolk (CC), expressing the date as the LL. reporting date of 10-NOV-1789.

NB: The accounts of the direction of the voyage are contradictory.
