Summary

Between 1927 and 1973 Roman pottery sherds, tiles, coins and rubbish pits have been found at Capel St Mary. The finds are in Ipswich Museum.

Full Description

Sestertius of Nerva, AD 96-98 (M & S 85), found in roadworks 1961 at TM 0826 3708 (S2)(S3).
Pottery from three pits on N side of road, 1961, excavated by Ipswich Museum (S1)(S2)(S3):
1. Bones, pottery, tiles, samian (forms 39, 33, 31).
2. Bones, tiles, amphora, samian, (forms 48, 18/31), colour coated beaker. 3. Amphora, grey wares.
(Note: Sites 3,4,5,6,7 & 11 probably all part of one scattered settlement.)

Further Information:

Romano-British material has been found at Capel St
Mary between 1927 and 1973.

TM 084372. Romano-British pottery including Samian and coarse
ware found 1927. Romano-British sherds and a pit 35ft in
diameter and 4ft deep contaiing more sherds were discovered
in the same vicinity in 1958-9. Finds in Ipswich Museum,
Acc No 948-122 and 959-157.

TM 08263708. A sestertius of Nerva (AD 97) found 1961. In
Ipswich Museum Acc No 961-39.

TM 08163708-TM 08253712. Three rubbish pits containing
Romano-British pottery discovered 1961. In Ipswich Museum
961-39. Three similar pits were found in 1973:

Pit 'A' - TM 08023695, contained fragments of roofing tiles
and pottery including Samian.

Pit 'B' - TM 08053693, contained iron slag and pottery sherds
including Samian.

Pit 'C' - TM 08073696, contained frgments of iron, roofing tile,
storage jar and carinated bowl. Also found were stone wall
footings 0.33m wide and 1.22m long at TM 08063692. In Ipswich
Museum Acc No 173-112. (S4)
