Full Description
Church of St Mary, in diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, the archdeaconry of Sudbury and the deanery of Ixworth. It has status of a vicarage (S1). Church recorded in domesday. The structure of present church is: chancel, cleristoried nave, aisles, N porch, W tower with pinnacles (S1). The date is mainly perpendicular and decorated. Features include: nave roof with braced tie-beams, alternating with hammer beams; typical C14 font; C15 rood screen; benches, some marked S.1620B; rectangular tower; S aisle with C14 encaustic tiles and C13 sepulchral slab with cross emblem; segments of C15 glass in E window; iron and leather clad vestry door; C13 chest; wall paintings (largely destroyed?)(S2).
Basil Brown archive shows details of encaustic floor tiles, including two showing man's face with protruding tongue (side view and full face), one with floral and one with geometric designs. Also note on coped sepulchral slab with cross emblem (S3).
South wall contains 'crant or maidens garland' to Mary Boyce. (S4)
