Full Description

Hoard of four small unfinished palstaves and Sompting form socketed axe, reputedly "found in Roman mound at Eriswell in 1837" (S1), or in a barrow, now destroyed, at Eriswell in 1837 (S2).
Also note similar palstave 'from a barrow at Icklingham' (S3).
Palstaves suspected to be part of the Stibbard hoard, Norfolk. Association with socketed axe seems unlikely (S3).
Re-examination of the evidence suggests a possible genuine local findspot - see (S4).

Formerly recorded as ERL MISC
