Full Description
Large scatter of pottery and tile.
1960: Found on a newly ploughed field. Predominantly C4 pottery including Nene Valley, shell filled, mortaria and flanged bowls. Tiles, yellowish roof and flat. Also a large iron hook and ring (S1,S5,S9).
Neolithic & Bronze Age finds (MNL 113) and part of a BA bronze knife (MNL 115) are also sited within this spread.
1989: Metal detecting this area for years. Describes most productive area as mound, near the base, on which the farmer broke up a layer of ginger-coloured stuff with a smooth surface but like concrete underneath, 6"-9" thick, probably 6 or 8ft square (iron pan or opus signinum?).
Apparently Col Kelly also dug on this area with a woman (thought to be from a museum but possibly Mrs Arden- Jones, Isleham?). Stated that area of dig is still visibly disturbed but overgrown (suggests possibly North East portion of MNL 065). Also states (metal detecting) finds have come from top half of field only, but scattered - suggests South West end of South field of MNL 096. Finds include `usual cruciform type' brooches and minims in two clumps of 100 and 80 (2 in Moyses Hall Museum, S4). Also in these clumps were `about 3 metal (bronze) balls about the size that would produce a minim if stamped out' (S3).
Only odd coins from this site (S7).
1996: Bracelet(?) terminal and unfinished lead head (Rom?) detected. Also reported earlier detector finds of lead and copper alloy waste and several hundred (200-300) Rom coins, mostly C3/C4 plus occasional sestertii (S8).
From NHRE record:
B: TL 682786. A large scatter of mainly 4th century potsherds including colour-coated and castor ware, tiles, oyster shells and a large iron hook and ring were found on a newly ploughed field (S11, S5, S9).
