Full Description
Pre 1891: Observations by Skertchly of section at this brickyard, about 2 km East of High Lodge, (MNL 002), are particularly relevant to High Lodge sequence. His section shows boulder clay on `grey, laminated loam', both banked against chalk on the W side. In the loam he found flakes and `a small implement'. Others were obtained from a local collector, S G Fenton of Mildenhall. Two mint flakes, one trimmed into a side scraper, in the Geological Museum labelled as coming from `Mildenhall, from loam beneath boulder clay'. If these came from this site it would appear to be a further instance of a High Lodge type industry beneath boulder clay.
There is also a cast of a finely-made cordate hand-axe, 10cm long, in the Sedgwick Museum labelled from `Brandon Bed loam, Mildenhall', which is probably the one found by Skertchly (S1, S2).
