Full Description

Registered landscape park designed by Humphrey Repton. The Red Book of c 1791 with details of his proposals still survives (S1).
The landscape park embraced an earlier deer park (see HAM 019) and Repton's park was later slighly extended on the E and W sides when new turnpike roads were built, replacing the older roads shown on Repton's plans. Lake proposed by Repton constructed 1991 (S2). Remains of pleasure grounds c 85 ha. in landscape park of c 250 ha, now partly farmland. Remains of formal layout to east of house demolished in 1953 (see HAM 006), lawns to west, views to park. Wooded pleasure-grounds, well-wooded park with areas of lawns. Perimeter planting to W and E; plantations, scattered trees (S2).
HER boundary amended in NE corner after English Heritage map (S3) in October 1995.

March 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
Several earthworks and some cropmarks are visible on aerial photographs within the park, some of which have been recorded elsewhere (WNF 040 and WNF 042), others of which may relate to paths within the park and are mainly visible on one set of photographs (S4), and have therefore not been mapped.

Features visible on Lidar. See associated files.

2008: Method Statement for Time Team non-invasive and invasive work proposed at Henham Park to determine the character and boundaries of the Park over time and the character of sib-surface archaeological remains comprising manor houses known to have existed on the site in the 15th and 16th centuries as well as to investigate the possible location of a proposed early medieval Henham Hall bounded by a linear pond, thought to be the possible remnants of a moat (S5).
