Full Description

February 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The site of World War Two barrage balloon, air raid shelters and trenches are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). Large numbers of entrances to sub-surface air raid shelters are also visible surrounding the large western zigzag trench – not mapped individually but defined by an ‘extent of area’ polygon. Parchmarks in 1944 (S4) on the recreation space to the south of the barrage balloon mooring would indicate further temporary structures. A possible additional World War Two structure may be visible to the south of the field, although its function was uncertain and it may not be military in origin.
S. Horlock (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 20th February 2014.
