Description
Fieldwalking and trial trench evaluation were carried out ahead of development. Fieldwalking covered the development area, results are recorded under TYY 071. Evaluation was focused in the centre of the area at the site of Blofield Hall, results are recorded under TYY 025. Six trenches were excavated. Trenches 1-5 revealed topsoil between 0.15-0.5m, below was a layer of demolition material upto 0.85m thick. Features were present below this layer. This lay on the natural greyish clayey sand. Trench 6 was located on the western side of the trackway and where possible was excavated to the top of the natural, however the presence of concrete floor slabs, brick walls and concrete beams prevented this along c.50% of its length. The nautral sand lay between 0.2m-0.7m below the present ground surface, under dirty mixed deposits which contained building rubble. Trial trenching indicated that much of the site has been damaged, particularly by service trenches, and in the course of the construction of the most recent buildings. Despite this, evidence for several phases of earlier buildings were identified. As a result of these findings, new recommendations were proposed for further archaeological work on the site (S1).
