Full Description

1999: A shallow natural sand filled hollow containing Mes/Early Neo flints was found during excavation in advance of construction of a new dormitory at RAF Lakenheath (S1). The site lies on the east side of Norwich Road immediately north of the 1997 cemetery site, ERL 104. The excavation revealed a network of ditches apparently dating to the Roman and Saxon periods (both Early Anglo-Saxon and Middle Saxon pottery was recovered) as well as some pits. The topography was undulating with natural sand-filled hollows, one containing Mes/Early Neo flints, evident across site. It is hoped to tie the results of this work with the evidence found in ERL 104 excavation for Anglo-Saxon activity beyond the limits of the cemetery. (S1,S2).
