Full Description
See arttype list for all artefacts.
Large villa complex. "West Wing" was excavated from 1935-1939 by Guy Maynard, Curator of Ipswich Museum and Basil Brown. The villa originally consisted of an aisled timber hall situated near a pond and probably built circa AD 130. Late in C2 a group of bath buildings was added at the S end of the hall. Alterations were made to the baths at the end of C2 by adding a second heated room and an annexe built to link the baths to the main building. A N bath block was added at an unknown date, which remained in use in the C4 (S1).
Finds included: 101 coins ranging from C1-C4. Coloured, patterned and plain glass from vessels and windows. Samian pottery, some bearing potter's stamps. Bowls, dishes and jars of coarse pottery. Mortaria, some with stamps. Colour coated or Castor ware hunt cup and box lid. Iron nails, keys, latch-lifter, shears blade, knives, rivets, candle-holder, bucket handle mount, angle brackets, wall hook, T staples, door fitting, cold chisel, curved blade, stylus, hook ended tool, chisel, rings, ox goad and horseshoe. Bronze bracelets, bracelet trim, finger ring, penannular brooch, tweezers, bow brooch (Colchester type), cylindrical strip, mount, boss, scales, hook and 2 fibulae. Lead sinker and curved window frame. Silver earpick. Bracelets made from shale. Roofing tiles, box tiles and many tesserae. Bone trimmings and inlays. Much painted wall plaster which was multi-coloured and showed various designs (S1)(S2).
Basil Brown's OS maps show that buildings, which were not excavated, existed in a field across the Bardwell Road, S of the excavated villa site (S2). The excavations were assisted by a grant from the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and were widely publicised in the press, both local and national, and heavily visited by the public during the years of excavation (S2). At (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s), Basil Brown has marked on map 19, "Skeleton in pit". A further reference to this notes: "From the late tenant and owner of the farm, Mr Howes, I obtained the following. A skeleton of a man was found in the pit at the top of the field above the site. He, of course, did not know what period it was buried - about 2 feet deep. The position of the pit can be clearly seen (1935) and Roman coins were found on the same field and on the 6 acre field to the West." (S2).
(see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) approximately: scatter of coins, some from `a black area' - late C3-C4 plus one Faustina I (?). Found with a metal detector (S8). Also IA, Sax.
