Full Description
Burrow Hill. Major MSax site excavated in advance of quarrying operations by the Butley Excavation Group. Details of excavations, 1978-1981, including date of circa AD 780 for early phase of cemetery of over 200 inhumations (predominantly male & adult) including claimed small boat burials. Ipswich type ware includes some stamp decorated sherds. Coins include 5 of Beonna from 1980-1981 excavation, one sceatta circa 690-750, 4 scattas circa 730-750 and one penny of Cuthred (Kent) 798-807, - see (S6)(S7).
1. Two joining sherds of Ipswich ware from edge of quarry at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s). 2. Sherd of Ipswich ware from path on N edge of hill at approx (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s). 1. & 2. reported in 1978, 1. in SAU and 2. in possession of M Baker.
1983: `A sixth season of excavation by Valerie Fenwick on this 18 ha former island produced further closely-dated MSax contexts. Occupation of the summit occurred during the ? C4 BC.... and the late C7 to mid C9 centuries. A pottery kiln of coralline crag was dated archaeolmagnetically to circa AD830 by D H Tarling (Newcastle University) & a replica was built & fired to 800- 1000 degrees by E Rowe' (S1).
1984: `A seventh season of excavation on the summit revealed MSax post-in- hole structures. Clay loom weights, as small as 150g, together with iron `dress-makers' pins, needles and a bone bobbin, showed that fine cloth was being woven in the early C9' (S2).
1985: Eighth season. `Further Anglo-Saxon contexts were investigated' (S3). Finds include at least eleven coins, including some of Beonna (S4). Claims shaft furnace for iron ore and `Ipswich ware' kiln (S5).
