Full Description
Greenway Farmhouse was destroyed by fire and rebuilt during the 20th C and most of its outbuildings were completely rebuilt in the 19th and 20th C except for 16th C timber-framed 3 bay threshing barn, also used as a cowhouse during the 19th C. The frame is farily in-tact, although the roof was replaced during the 20th C. A porch was also added during the 19th C.
Early maps show that another larger barn was once present at the site, as well as a bakehouse. Sale particulars also mention a dairy, cart shed, stables, chaff house, root house, pigstyes and fowl houses (S1).
Greenway Farm, Gosbeck. 16th century farmstead and 19th century farmhouse. Loose courtyard three-sided plan formed by working agricultural buildings. The farmhouse is set away from the yard. Significant loss (over 50%) of the traditional farm buildings. Located within a hamlet (S2-7).
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
