Full Description
2013: The initial geophysical survey identified a negative linear anomaly, possibly representing a bank or earthwork relating to an earlier field boundary, and a small poistive curvi-linear anomaly and a number of small, roughly circular positive anomalies which may represent cut features (S1).
2014: The first phase of archaeological evaluation trenching revealed a post medieval boundary ditch and two undated ditches. A single sherd of Roman pottery, one flint and animal bone were recovered from the features (S2). Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2014 (S6)
2015: The second phase of archaeological evaluation trenching revealed a series of Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age pits and two Iron Age ditches. Prehistoric finds were also recovered from a series of natural hollows across the site. Worked flint including a Mesolithic bladelet and a late Neolithic sub-circular invasively retouched knife. Prehistoric pottery dating from the Late Neolithic to the Middle Iron Age was also recovered, including sherds of Grooved Ware, Beaker and Collared Urn (S3).
2016: A further phase of evaluation trenching on the site are ongoing.
2017: Excavation archaeology of Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age date.Several Late Neolithic pits, containing varying quantities of Grooved Ware pottery, struck flints and animal bone, were the earliest features identified. These pits and the material they contained provide valuable evidence for Late Neolithic activity in the area. It is most likely that the material within the pits derives from an episode of occupation on the site, which was collected from a midden and deposited into these features. Early Bronze Age pottery was recovered from further pits. One pit is of particular interest, as it contained Collared Urn style pottery, along with a bone awl. Middle Iron Age features identified on the site almost certainly relate to a site previously excavated immediately to the east at the Bridge House Dairies site
(Woolhouse 2010). These Iron Age features consisted of several small ditches and pits, although only a small quantities of finds were recovered and it seems that main focus of occupation was located further to the eas (S6t.
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2017 (S4). Full report to follow.
