Monument record CUP 028 - Bronze Age and Roman features at East Anglia One Area 14

2017: Excavation revealed a possible Bronze Age enclosure. The upper fills of the ditches contained Iron Age pottery. Beneath the lowermost fill was an antler pick. Within this enclosure post-holes possibly forming two ‘round houses’ were excavated, as were several possible cremations. Several other linear features and pits of a Romano-British date were excavated towards the western end of the site and one grave containing an inhumation in the form of a sand body. Towards the centre of the site several layers of colluvium were observed to overlay Neolithic to Bronze Age features. These features were made up of pits, postholes and a small ditch. The investigation revealed six phases of datable features ranging from the Middle Bronze Age through to the Post Medieval period. In addition, eight sherds of unstratified or residual Neolithic pottery are suggestive of a possible earlier unidentified phase of activity. A large enclosure appeared to be established in the Middle Bronze Age at the western end of the site and this appears to have continued in use until the Early Iron Age. The primary period of activity was during the Late Bronze Age to early Iron Age with the pottery sequence indicating a focus on the period 1150-800 BC. The noted activity was related to likely agricultural enclosures and settlement edge activities including a fire pit and waste pits. Other features of note were a Romano-British field system of 2nd to 3rd century AD date and an Anglo-Saxon burial. Both the Romano-British and Anglo-Saxon phases are likely to relate to a settlement focus to the north of Site 14, possibly in the vicinity of Culpho Hall. (S2)
