Monument record MUD 026 - Cropmarks of common-edge enclosures and field boundaries of probable medieval to post medieval date

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks of enclosures, boundaries and field boundaries of unknown, but possibly Roman or medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs. This site is located alongside the Mutford Common – as its depicted on Hodskinson’s map of 1783 – and it is likely that some of these enclosures relate to medieval common-edge settlement, as has been suggested for the adjacent (MUD 023). The broad bank-like feature mapped may relate to the track or lane visible on the map leading towards Mutford Big Wood. The fragmentary ditches within the eastern part of the site are likely to relate to medieval to post medieval field boundaries.

Full Description

July 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The cropmarks of enclosures, boundaries and field boundaries of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). This site is located alongside the Mutford Common – as its depicted on Hodskinson’s map of 1783 (S4) – and it is likely that some of these enclosures relate to medieval common-edge settlement, as has been suggested for the adjacent (MUD 023). The broad bank-like feature mapped may relate to the track or lane visible on the map leading towards Mutford Big Wood. The fragmentary ditches within the eastern part of the site are likely to relate to medieval to post medieval field boundaries. The site also includes some undated fragmentary ditches, which potentially pre-date the main components of cropmarks.
