At a meeting of the SIA, October 1859, at Framlingham an impression of a bronze seal was exhibited.

Sax pottery sherds, incuding at least one rim, recovered by Basil Brown from churchyard and 3 feet high bank surrounding it.

Two trenches were opened in St Mary's churchyard to test the reports that a substantial stone structure had been found by grave digging in the last century (C19) and had been associated with King Guthrum.

In digging the foundations of the new church there was found a coarse urn of unbaked earth, probably British, which is now in the possession of the Reverend Henry Hasted, of Bury, where I saw it, 1834 (S1).

Originally the site of a Saxon church recorded in Domesday book, then site of a Benedictine nunnery AD 1160-1537, the present church is probably the parochial nave to which a nun's choir belonged (see BUN 122 for Churchyard).

A church (plus 30 acres land and one plough) is recorded at Kelsale in the Domesday Survey of 1086.
