Full Description
Church of St Peter. Now disused. Close to Augustinian Priory of St Peter & St Paul (IPS 839). Possibly the same as the church of Gislebert recorded in the Domesday book. Much 14th Century work. Probably connected with Wolsey's College when the church served as a chapel to the college (see IPS 223 & 275). Details in (S1-S3).
1977: Building recording.
1986: Electrical cable revealed, human remains, Saxon and Medieval pottery and a bronze strip (S3).
2007-8: A programme of evaluation and monitoring were undertaken during refurbishment and conversion of St Peter's for use as a concert venue. A series of eight-test pits were excavated within the interior of the church, while service trenches outside the church were monitored. The test pits revealed footings from the adjacent walls and pillars and heavily disturbed graveyard deposits incorporated into the building debris. The monitoring outside the church also revealed extensive ground disturbance, with the result that it was not possible to draw any firm conclusions regarding the development of the church. (S4)
See also report on the font, (S5).
Visible on Speede's Map of 1610, (S6)
In 1552, John Steward desired that his body might be ".. buried in the churchyard of St Peters on the south side of the crosse." (S7)
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2008 (S9).
