Full Description

2011: In trench 1 situated to the north of the site, ten post holes were identified, set in three approximately parallel, equally spaced rows. Eight of these post-holes produced finds of 11-12th century date including pottery, lava quern, animal bone and ceramic building material. These post-holes likely form part of a structure. Fragments of Roman tegula were also identified in the post holes along with the Early Medieval material. The quite narrow date range of the pottery suggests that the settlement was relatively short lived. Two large features were identified that could represent extraction pits for the nearby 19th century brick kiln located 300m south west (S1).

A number of visits were made to the site to inspect ground level reduction associated with the creation of an access roads and for pads from which to build a number of holiday chalets. For the most part, these works involved minimal ground disturbance and in the small areas where potential archaeological levels were reached, no features or finds were observed. Footings for a large barn were also monitored, revealing two undated features as well as an area of modern disturbance (S2).
