Monument record GRT 003 - St Bartholomew's Church

Church, St Bartholomew's. Partly restored 1880 (S1)(R1).

Monitoring of excavations in the churchyard recorded an infilled ditch which produced three sherds of medieval pottery that were spot-dated to the 13th-century. The ditch is thought to have once been the west boundary of the graveyard before it was enlarged, probably during the 15th-century when the church itself was being re-built. The work within the tower uncovered part of a series of brick-built sleeper walls that once supported the joists of a suspended timber floor. The floor of the nave was replaced in 1868-9 and no evidence of any underlying, earlier surfaces remained, but a buried layer of medieval building rubble was recorded at the west end of the nave. Observations of the foundations suggested a sequence of construction for the church and showed that the tower was already in existence when the nave was built, although the two are broadly of the same date (S2).
